We are seeking a highly motivated and qualified candidate for the role of full-time Architectural Historian – Principal Investigator, reporting to the Indiana Regional Manager and working in our Indianapolis, Indiana office. The Architectural Historian will be responsible for evaluating the eligibility of historic buildings for listing in the National Register of Historic Places, for Section 106 compliance, and Section 4(f) documentation for coordination with Indiana Department of Transportation (DOT), Indiana Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology (DHPA), Michigan DOT, and Michigan State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO). This position works with a team including archaeologists and environmental scientists. The Architectural Historian will provide expertise in aboveground cultural resources to the office.

THE PERSON

The ideal candidate will have a Master’s (preferred) or Bachelor’s degree in Architectural History, Historic Preservation, History, Art History, or a closely related field. Candidates must also have a minimum of 5 years’ experience (or an equivalent combination of education and experience) in cultural resource management, Section 106 regulations and compliance, and determinations of eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places. Prior experience working with the Indiana DHPA and Indiana DOT Cultural Resources Office is preferred. Excellent written and oral communication skills are critical, as is attention to detail. The ability to work as a team member in a fast paced, collaborative environment is important. The ability to effectively navigate clients through the Section 106 process is essential to ensure project expectations are established and managed.

Our desired, well-rounded candidate will work on our existing and upcoming Section 106 compliance projects and actively work to develop new projects. They will manage or conduct investigations largely independently, but in coordination with the Regional Manager and Architectural History Project Manager. Other job duties will include:

  • Perform literature reviews and records checks;
  • Conduct research at archives/historical organizations;
  • Conduct field investigations;
  • Complete Historic Resource Survey Forms;
  • Complete Determination of Effect Evaluations;
  • Coordinate and compete resolution of adverse effects;
  • Complete Section 4(f) Evaluations;
  • Coordinate and communicate with consulting parties and clients;
  • Coordinate with state agencies (primarily State DOT and State SHPO);
  • Conduct light marketing;
  • Prepare proposals and cost estimates; and
  • Attend client/agency, consulting party, and public meetings.

In-office attendance is a requirement, but remote work for portions of each week is an option after 90 days based on job requirements. Candidates must meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualifications Standards (36 CFR 61) for Architectural History. Must have or obtain a valid driver's license.

Pay: $75,000.00 - $85,000.00 per year
